Notarization is basically about making documents trustworthy having an official person verify identities and confirm that signatures are real.
Ancient times (around 2000 BCE): In places like Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, scribes wrote contracts and kept records. They acted like early notaries by witnessing agreements.
Roman Empire: The Romans created more formal systems. Officials called notarii recorded legal matters and helped prevent fraud. This is where the idea of notarization really took shape.
Middle Ages: The Catholic Church played a big role. Notaries became trusted legal officials across Europe, especially for contracts, wills, and property deals.
Modern era (1600s–today): Countries began creating laws for notaries. In places like the United States, notaries public are officially appointed to verify identities, witness signatures, and help prevent fraud.
Today: Notarization can even be done online (remote notarization), using video calls and digital signatures.
